Your Infiniti is a high-performance vehicle with a powerful engine that can build up a huge amount of heat on the road. To keep it from overheating, your cooling system needs to be kept in tip-top condition. This includes your radiator, which serves the vital function of lowering the temperature of the fluid which cools the whole engine. If you notice the following three signs of radiator trouble, it’s time to visit your local Infiniti dealer for radiator repair

Your Coolant Fluid Is Leaking

The most important fluid in your car is without doubt the coolant fluid, which your radiator keeps from growing too hot. Without this fluid, parts of your engine would rapidly overheat and begin to melt and fuse inside, eventually breaking down altogether. Coolant fluid tends to have a bright color, such as yellow, green, or red. It also usually smells slightly sweet.

If you ever notice such a liquid pooling under your car, pop the hood and check your coolant container. On the side of the container, you’ll see markers for minimum and maximum fluid levels. If the levels have fallen too low, then you’ve probably discovered a coolant fluid leak. This leak might be coming from the radiator itself, the radiator hose, or somewhere else in the cooling system. Have a trusted technician locate and repair it.

Your Engine Is Overheating

Always keep an eye on the engine temperature gauge on your Infiniti’s instrument panel. When you’re driving and all’s well, the needle should always be at a midway point between too cold and too hot. If you ever notice this needle creeping higher, don’t ignore it. It means your cooling system, and quite likely your radiator, has stopped functioning properly.

More Warning Signs of Overheating

If you happen to miss this initial warning from the gauge, there are all kinds of other signs of overheating. Your hood will become hot to touch, you’ll begin to hear ticking or thumping noises from the engine, you might smell something burning, and the power of your engine will noticeably diminish.

Your final warning will be white steam pouring out of the hood. If this occurs, pull over immediately and have a tow truck take you to a mechanic, who will hopefully be able to repair your radiator and rescue your engine block.

Your Radiator Is Rusting

The metal in your radiator can begin to rust if exposed to moisture over long periods of time. This rust can damage the radiator’s proper functioning, and also cause cracks in the hose connections, or in the body of the radiator itself. If you notice anything more than a very slight patina of rust, the radiator will need to be properly cleaned, and possibly repaired or replaced.

Moisture collects under a car’s hood in very damp or cold environments but tends to steam off every time the engine is powered up. So it’s cars that are left unused for prolonged periods in cold, damp climates that are most at risk of rusting radiators.
