3 Electrical Problems You Should Always Fix at Your INFINITI Dealer

Failing Alternator

The alternator is an essential part of your electrical system, as its purpose is to generate electricity for your car’s systems. Alternators have a relatively long life of approximately eight years before they need replacement. Their lifespan, however, can be reduced by other problems like a damaged battery. If your alternator starts to fail, it will gradually produce less and less electricity.

It can be difficult to identify the start of an alternator problem, as an alternator usually produces more power than your car’s systems require. Eventually, the alternator won’t be able to supply enough power for all your car’s systems. When this happens, random electrical issues will develop, and these issues will intensify as the alternator weakens. We can test your alternator and install a new one for you if it’s failing.

Burning Insulation

Your car contains over a mile of electrical wiring to supply power to all your car’s systems. The wires are protected against heat, dirt, and other potential issues by plastic insulation. Despite this protection, the wires will age, and aged wiring can break. Electricity can’t flow through a broken wire, and this will cut off power to any systems or devices connected to the damaged wire.

Electricity will continue to flow into a broken wire, and this can cause the wire to heat up. If a wire gets hot enough, it can burn the electrical insulation. If this problem develops, your check battery light will illuminate in response to the broken wire. You will also usually smell the cloying scent of burning plastic. We’ll test the wiring and replace any damaged sections to fix this problem.

Starter Problems

The engine requires electricity to start, and this electricity is provided by the battery. The electrical charge from the battery is received by the starter solenoid, which passes this power to the starter. The starter initiates the cranking process, and this process starts the engine. Once your engine is running, the combustion process will keep it running until you switch off your engine.

A damaged solenoid, loose connections, broken wires, or a damaged starter can all make starting your engine difficult or even impossible. If the starter is damaged, your engine won’t start even if you attempt to jump-start it. Our technicians will investigate and fix or replace the cause of the problem.

Problems in the electrical system will get worse over time. Call our service department today at Bommarito INFINITI.
