At first, you mightn’t think that Ellisville, MO is an amazing place to get outdoors, but look a little closer and you’ll find lots of brilliant hiking trails, parks, and green spaces to enjoy. Hit the road, and there’s even more within a short drive of the city. We’ve put together this short guide to help you discover the best trails near you.

5 Favorite Hiking Trails in and Around Ellisville, MO

1. Bluebird Park Trail

Bluebird Park is one of the best outdoor spaces in Ellisville, with miles of trails and lots of wildlife to discover. The main park trail is just under 2 miles long, and, like most of the trails in the park is fairly flat, with only a few hills to make things more interesting. You’re likely to see runners and dog walkers, but keep a special eye out for squirrels, deer, and other critters as you stroll along.

2. Babler State Park Trails

One of the most popular state parks in Missouri, Babler State Park is a great destination for hiking, and it’s only a few minute’s drive from Ellisville. The park’s trails wind through forests, sheltered coves, and past picturesque streams and creeks. One of the best trails in the Virginia Day Memorial Nature Trail, a short, looped trail, about a mile and a half in length, that gives a good overview of the forest and is a great way to experience the flora and fauna of the park.

If you’re looking for a longer walk, then try the Equestrian Trail, although be aware that, as the name suggests, there may be horses and riders using it as well. It’s about six miles long and passes some historic structures built by the CCC in the 1930s.

3. Grant’s Trail

Honoring former President Ulysses S. Grant, this trail in the center of the St. Louis metro area offers a relaxed atmosphere, passing through wooded areas and over creeks. There are lots of great places to stop off along the way, including Grant’s Farm, an animal park that kids will love. The trail is an out and back trail that’s a little over 10 miles long, including the two extra miles added in 2020, and there are plans to extend it further.

 

4.  Hawks Ridge Trail

Located in nearby Manchester, Hawks Ridge Trail follows the edge of Queeny Park. It’s mostly paved along its route and is multi-use, so you might encounter cyclists and runners as well as other hikers. Some of the highlights include century-old trees, deep forests, and lush meadows. It’s a great trail for families, especially those with young children, as it is mostly flat along its entire length.

5. Sandstone Canyon Trail

Sandstone Canyon is a great place for those who want to explore a canyon area or fancy a break from the forests. However, you’ll also see waterfalls, ruins, and interesting plants and wildlife along the way. The trail is located in Don Robinson State Park and is about four miles long.
